Peaceful Waiting

One of the most difficult things to do in life is ‘to wait” – wouldn’t you agree? I remember times as a young child staying up all night waiting to see what Christmas presents I was going to get on that special ‘Christmas morning’. In fact, I have to admit that I was a master at peeking ahead for not only my gifts but all of my sibling’s gifts. Ha-there are 7 of them so peeking at that many gifts was quite an adventure! I remember another occasion that made it almost impossible to wait…going to the beach. Every year we took a big trip to the beach as a family and I was always anxious to see which room I would get. Of course, I wanted to hurry and get out to the beach so that I didn’t miss out on any of the action. Being the youngest of 8 children made life ‘fun’ all the time. There was always excitement surrounding our family. Lots of adventure and activity. Well, on this day, I was a pest evidently because my mother sent me out on the deck. I guess I was about 10 and I must have bothered her a little too much. But I just couldn’t wait…I had to know which room was mine at the beach house. I didn’t think about the fact that she had 7 other kids to deal with…NO I wanted to know NOW. So I don’t blame her for locking me out on the deck at all…at least now that I’m older. We are all like that with God. We have trouble waiting on Him. You see, that is our problem with waiting – WE HAVE TO KNOW NOW. We feel like we have to know what is going to happen, but God is the author of life and He is the only one who really knows anything in the future. So we have to hold on to God and listen to Him. But how…

In a case like that when we have trouble waiting we need to go ask the One who plans time, God Himself. So I have learned to ‘ask God’ when I have trouble waiting. Of course, His answer comes to us through His words for comfort that are in the Bible. We need to read and listen to His Bible. Looking at God’s word will give you wisdom and understanding and of course, comfort and peace while you wait. Here’s what I do in order to accomplish that ‘wretched’ task of waiting. I have index cards that I put in a coupon booklet and read through them nightly before bed. This is really helpful because you think about all the scriptures during the night and sometimes I wake up quoting them. Here are some of the 35 verses that I have on these cards that are all under the topic ‘wait’. You can look up ‘wait’ on https://www.biblegateway.com/ to find them. Write them or type on index cards.

Proverbs 8:34 (NASB) – “Blessed is the man who listens to me,

Watching daily at my gates,

Waiting at my doorposts.”

Psalm 130:5-6 (NASB) – “I wait for the Lord, my soul does wait,

And in His word do I hope.

My soul waits for the Lord.”

Psalm 25:3, 5, & 21 (NASB) – “Indeed, none of those who wait for You will be

ashamed; Those who deal treacherously

without cause will be ashamed.”

“Lead me in Your truth and teach me,

For You are the God of my salvation;

For You I wait all the day.”

“Let integrity and uprightness preserve me,

For I wait for You.”

Psalm 27:14 (NASB) – “Wait for the Lord; Be strong and let

your heart take courage;

Yes, wait for the Lord.”

Isaiah 40:31 (NASB) – “Yet those who wait for the Lord Will gain new strength;

They will mount up with wings like eagles,

They will run and not get tired,

They will walk and not become weary.”

Isaiah 64:4 (NASB) – “For from days of old they have not heard or perceived by ear,

Nor has the eye seen a God besides You,

Who acts in behalf of the one who waits for Him.”

These are just a sample from what the Bible contains. Look them all up. You will be blessed beyond belief and you will find comfort and peace while you wait. Why? Because you are listening to God, not the world. The world tells us to get an answer immediately, to get a ‘quick fix’, yet God wants us to learn to wait. Pray and read your Bible while you wait. God knows the future, He knows the past, He sees your life from beginning to end so trust in Him while you wait. Listen to the song below for extra comfort while you wait.
